Professional bass angler Bryan Thrift celebrates after winning the Toyota Texas

The weather was horrible with a combination of a cold front, high winds and rain. Those are three things that will give bass anglers nightmares. Even with the wacky weather, North Carolina angler Bryan Thrift managed a final catch of five bass weighing 25 pounds during last weekend’s Toyota Texas Bass Classic held on Lake Conroe, and reeled in a whopping first-place prize of $150,000. Thrift finished with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 53 pounds, 4 ounces.


Lamar football looks for its third consecutive win over Southeastern Louisiana as they host the Lions on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. to open the Southland Conference portion of their schedule. Locals prep for big MMA card at Beaumont Civic Center



Unless you were a coach on the Lamar staff or one of the players, you probably thought the Cardinals had a small chance of beating Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday in the college football season opener. I mean, UL plays in the bigger Football Bowl Subdivision won a bowl game last season. No way, right?What we didn’t expect to see were a plethora of mistakes which led to many easy points and short drives for UL. The 13 points yielded by Lamar in the first quarter came on drives no longer than six plays each.
