Eight Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD students were invited to compete in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics weightlifting competition in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center on July 27. American and world records were broken by these students, who brought home 16 gold medals and one silver.

New coach, new conference and even new uniforms — the Texas A&M Aggies are finally out of the shadow of the University of Texas. The team lost four of its last five regular season games, and parted with coach Mike Sherman, hiring Kevin Sumlin from the University of Houston. The Aggies did manage to end the season on a high note as they defeated Northwestern 33-22 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

After a dismal 5-7 season in 2010, the Texas Longhorns rebounded with an 8-5 record last year and earned a 21-10 victory over California in the Holiday Bowl. Despite that bowl win, that 8-5 record, along with losses to Oklahoma State, Missouri and Kansas State and blowout losses to Baylor and Oklahoma, is subpar by the standards in Austin.

It’s August and the temperature is scorching hot, which means one thing — football season is less than a month away. The infamous two-a-day practices begin bright and early on Monday, Aug. 6, for schools that did not participate in spring practices, which applies to just Class 5A and 4A Schools.

Lamar football, which returns 14 total starters, was picked seventh in the 2012 Southland Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll results announced July 24 during the SLC Football Media Day at L’Auberge du Lac in Lake Charles.

The Cardinals are coming off a sixth-place finish after a 4-7 overall record and 2-5 Southland mark. Lamar was the only school not represented on the Southland Conference’s preseason all-conference team.
