Teachers, students and parents are awaiting some sort of normalcy in their lives, which includes the start of the 2017-18 school year.

Beaumont Independent School District has a tentative goal of beginning school Monday, Sept. 11, but will host an emergency meeting Friday, Sept. 8, at the Administration Building (3395 Harrison Ave) at noon to make a final decision.

Linda’s Lighthouse is hosting their second annual back to school event in Port Arthur from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 19 at the Kingdom Dominion Church, located at 3600 Memorial Boulevard.

The 2016-2017 school year is around the corner, and Southeast Texas residents will be out getting students prepared. The upcoming Texas tax-free weekend from August 5-7 is popular for shopping and profitable for local businesses, but, it is also a lucrative time for criminals as shoppers are often preoccupied with children, shopping lists, foot and vehicle traffic, warns Officer Carol Riley of the Beaumont Police Department.

Beaumont Independent School District spokesperson Ron Reynolds reports that Back-to-School season in the district has been a success, with enrollment increasing daily and teacher vacancies dwindling. According to Reynolds, on the first day of classes, 18,073 students showed up to campuses throughout the district – a number that has swelled to 19,233 a little more than two weeks into the semester.

School is almost back in session, and the Beaumont Police Department is offering some back-to-school safety tips meant to keep students safe in preparation of the big opening day.
