After two years in Beaumont, K-Bob’s American Kitchen at 6455 Phelan Blvd. has closed its doors. Co-owner Morgan Booth is saying goodbye to what he called “the toughest market” he’s ever seen and to online critics who he feels dealt a deathblow to the business.

 The Salvation Army will be welcoming volunteers partnered with KaBOOM! and the Rebuild Texas Fund to build a kid-designed playground in just six hours on Saturday, April 27, at the Salvation Army of Beaumont. This playground comes as continued support Beaumont has received in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, even more than a year after the disastrous event.

Friday, March 8, administration at the Beaumont Independent School District received information regarding a possible threat towards West Brook High School, spokesperson Nakisha Burns reported. The threat, according to Burns, was posted on social media.  

“The administration immediately responded and contacted the BISD police department,” Burns advised. “The student was not on campus but is currently in police custody.  

“We want to assure parents that safety protocols were promptly followed to ensure student safety.”

The Golden Triangle Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (GT-TAME) Divisional STEM Competition was held on Saturday, Feb. 9, hosting 79 students from Beaumont, Groves, Hamshire-Fannett, Orange and Port Arthur at Lamar University for the meet.

“The Beaumont ISD Police Department is investigating allegations surrounding mismanagement of PTA funds at Amelia Elementary School,” Beaumont ISD spokesperson Nakisha Burns said. Little other information is available as the investigation is still in the early stages, Burns said, additionally noting that BISD employees cannot serve in a leadership role in campuses’ PTA.

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) will be hosting “A Vintage Valentine,” a dinner fundraiser, the night of Thursday, Feb. 14. 

The fundraiser will feature a sit-down dinner corresponding with wine and soft jazz by Sharon Montgomery and Jimmy Simmons. All proceed from the event will go to fund AMSET’s educational programs, which benefit local students.

The night will begin with champagne and appetizers, which will be followed be a dinner paired with curated wines and sweets to top it off. The event will have a balloon raffle with mystery prizes.

The Department of Public Safety released a statement on its enforcement effort operations for violations of the Move Over/Slow Down law across the state. Among these operations, one is planned to take place in the Beaumont District on Wednesday, Jan. 16. 

The law states that drivers must vacate the lane closest to the applicable vehicles stopped on the side of the road if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction, or slow down to 20 mph below the speed limit. If the speed limit is below 25 mph, the driver must slow down to 5 mph.

A pedestrian was pronounced deceased the night of Saturday, Jan. 12, after being hit by a vehicle while crossing College Street. 

According to a statement from Beaumont Police Department, the preliminary investigation revealed that a pedestrian was attempting to cross College Street when they were struck. The victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at St. Elizabeth Hospital with critical injuries. 

The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation that is still on going.
