Dr. Lonnie L. Howard

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall has named Lonnie L. Howard, Ph.D., sole finalist in the Lamar Institute of Technology presidential search. Dr. Howard, currently president/CEO of Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington, was selected from a field of nearly 40 candidates following a national search.

High school students dressed in bright red jackets were spotted all over the LIT campus recently as Lamar Institute of Technology hosted the SkillsUSA Texas District 7 competition Feb. 19-20. For more than 20 years, LIT has been the host site where students have gathered to compete in various skill contests. Students traveled from north of Houston, College Station, Lufkin and Southeast Texas. More than four hundred high school students attended this years’ competition.

Lamar Institute of Technology will host its ninth annual LIT Foundation Shoot-Out on Saturday, April 2, at the 1-in-100 Gun Club (1228 FM 421) in Lumberton. The event raises money for scholarships for students at Lamar Institute of Technology. Teams of four shooters will traverse the course, trying their skills at shooting clays and flights will begin at 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded by the Lewis System, which gives any shooter an opportunity to be a winner. Individual cost to participate is $175.

Houstonians mourned the loss of four firefighters who died when a hotel collapsed on the first responders as they were fighting a Southwest Inn blaze May 31, 2013. News of their deaths resonated in Southeast Texas, as well.

Two Lamar Institute of Technology students earned medals at the National SkillsUSA Competition held June 24-28 in Kansas City, Mo.

Kenneth Ross, a utility line technology student, earned a silver medal in job skill demonstration open. In this contest, competitors demonstrate and explain an entry-level job skill. His advisor was Rusty Koenig, program director of utility line technology.

Chevron Phillips Chemical and Lamar Institute of Technology became partners in educating a workforce suited for Southeast Texas on July 2, with Chevron Phillips’ presentation of an $80,000 check for scholarships and equipment upgrades.

Lamar Institute of Technology announced the president's and vice president’s lists for the Fall 2012 semester. For students to be included on the President’s List, they must have earned a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Students on the Vice President’s List must have earned a 3.40 to 3.99 GPA for the semester.
