It takes a special set of skills and a unique personality type to be a paramedic. The work can be incredibly draining both physically and mentally, with paramedics responding to everything from automobile accidents and shootings to stroke and seizure incidents. Paramedics, or emergency medical technicians, must be trained on how to treat infants to elderly, and must be prepared for any situation.

Lamar University runners Verity Ockenden and Iliass Aouani closed out the season for the cross country team Nov. 21 when both competed at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships hosted at Tom Sawyer State Park by Louisville.

Lamar University students, faculty and staff will celebrate a world of diversity in the LU International Cultural Festival: A Global Experience from 6-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2014, in the Montagne Center.

Hosted by the Office of International Student Services and International Student Council in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Lamar’s Small Business and Development Center, the event focuses on celebrating the diversity and cultures of International Students at Lamar.

Stuart Wright and Susan Palmer have completed what they believe is the first comprehensive study ever conducted of government raids on religious communities — Storming Zion: Government Raids on Religious Communities, the result of extensive research that took the two from Central and West Texas to the streets of Paris and Brussels to the most remote parts of the Alps and Pyrenees. Together, they recorded 116 raids.

The Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is expanding its use of body-worn cameras. Cameras are already in use across campus, according to a Lamar press release, from the campus security camera system to cameras in each LUPD patrol unit.

Lamar University is hosting a Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Setzer Student Center, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Students will learn about the opportunities and the benefits of studying abroad. Faculty members will be present to share about the many faculty-led programs available at LU. Students who studied abroad last year will also attend to share their experiences.
