Beaumont Police Department Chief Jimmy Singletary welcomed three new officers into his law enforcement “family” during a ceremony at the downtown station Sept. 9. Joshua Hall, Demond Janise and Willie Melancon were sworn-in as BPD officers, all taking an oath to protect and serve the community they now represent.

Community Bank of Texas presented Creative Corrections Education Foundation (CCEF) with a check for $2,500 on Wednesday, June 1, at the nonprofit’s Calder office in Beaumont. Executive Vice President for Community Bank of Texas G.A. Wimberly presented the check to Percy Pitzer, founder and president of CCEF.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to support local charities or nonprofits that are trying to benefit our community,” Wimberly said. “Keeping the money local benefits LIT and our local students.”

Cheniere Energy recently hosted a reception at Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) to recognize candidates accepted into the Craft Development Program established by the company last year.

The Craft Development Program is a workforce development program tailored to produce highly skilled welders needed to support ongoing construction along the Gulf Coast. Utilizing partnerships with LIT and local school districts, the program consists of advanced welding training at the college and customized, advanced welder training at a Cheniere-sponsored training facility.

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall has named Lonnie L. Howard, Ph.D., sole finalist in the Lamar Institute of Technology presidential search. Dr. Howard, currently president/CEO of Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Washington, was selected from a field of nearly 40 candidates following a national search.

High school students dressed in bright red jackets were spotted all over the LIT campus recently as Lamar Institute of Technology hosted the SkillsUSA Texas District 7 competition Feb. 19-20. For more than 20 years, LIT has been the host site where students have gathered to compete in various skill contests. Students traveled from north of Houston, College Station, Lufkin and Southeast Texas. More than four hundred high school students attended this years’ competition.

Three LIT Regional Police Academy cadets received scholarships from the Officer Bryan Hebert Memorial Foundation for their training in law enforcement at a ceremony inside the Beaumont Police Department on Jan. 26. 

Chosen from among numerous applicants, Willie Nolan Melancon, Macie Bergeron and Kirk Hinson all received awards covering their tuition at LIT.

Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who later was able to identify the bombers, will be the speaker for the LIT Foundation Salute to Real American Heroes on Sept. 10.

Lamar Institute of Technology will hold five orientation sessions for new students who plan to attend LIT in the fall. Each session will last an hour. There will be a separate orientation held at the same time for parents.

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall has named Dr. Betty Reynard, vice president for academic affairs at Lamar Institute of Technology, sole finalist in the Lamar State College-Port Arthur presidential search. Dr. Reynard was selected following an internal search that began last year.
