The Beaumont City Council chose its new mayor pro-tem following the death of Gethrel “Get” Williams Wright, the at-large councilwoman who was serving in the role at the time of her death.

Mayor Becky Ames said the council had to choose another Mayor Pro-Tem, who acts as the mayor’s substitute when she’s unavailable, as soon as possible. She also explained that the council would soon vote to fill Williams-Wright’s seat on the council in the interim until its next up for election. Council members say candidates are currently being considered.

The possibility of a federal government shutdown is threatening to delay a long-awaited Hurricane Harvey disaster relief package, state and local leaders told a legislative committee Thursday.

During a Texas House Committee on Urban Affairs hearing in Houston, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the much-needed federal aid shouldn’t be bogged down by partisan issues.

Pine Forest City Councilman Robert Kremer submitted his resignation last week, stating to The Examiner his reasons for leaving were the “unethical and possibly illegal” actions recently taken by the Mayor and council members after a recent meeting. Mayor Cathy Nagel contends nothing unethical or illegal took place and says she has the recording to prove it.

Kremer expressed, “The reason I resigned is the unethical and possibly illegal actions going on by the city council members and the mayor.”
