Meals on Wheels

The Beaumont Foundation of America is pleased to announce the 15 recipients of the 2017 Reaud Excellence in Education Award. Since 2009 the Foundation has recognized superior teachers whose dedication and leadership inspire both students and fellow educators. The awards provide public acclaim and financial rewards to these teachers who are furthering excellence in education throughout Southeast Texas.

Sue Philp of Beaumont began volunteering for Nutrition and Services For Seniors (NSFS) delivering hot food through the nonprofit’s Meals on Wheels program with her mother, Nel Phillips, more than 12 years ago. After her mother passed away, she continued the family tradition of helping seniors and even enlisted her husband, Roy.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Seniors is partnering with Meals on Wheels providers, local retailers and other agencies to make this Christmas special for 3,000 local seniors through the 2016 “Be a Santa to a Senior” Campaign.

Home Instead Senior Care kicked off the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program in 2003. Since then, with the help of 60,000 volunteers, more than 1.2 million gifts have been distributed through the program to 700,000 seniors across the United States.

“It’s more than just a meal,” Nutrition & Services for Seniors Executive Director Elaine Shellenberger says of the Meals on Wheels program her department administers.

And she’s right. Meals on Wheels provides many seniors much more than a daily meal or lunch delivery. Often, it allows them to maintain their independence.

More than 430 Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School students, 100 faculty members and 40 parents volunteered helping hands to more than 35 local charities and nonprofit organizations during Kelly Springs Into Action Day on Friday, April 15.

Kelly High School, established in 1895, is a diocesan, coeducational high school in Beaumont that, according to its mission statement, offers “cultural diversity, spiritual and personal development, and a strong college preparation in a loving and nurturing environment.”

Nutrition & Services For Seniors (NSFS) will be collecting the last of its winter garden harvest and is seeking volunteers to help with the effort Saturday, Feb. 20, at 4590 Concord Road in Beaumont from 9 a.m. – noon.

Volunteers are needed to harvest fruits and vegetables, work the compost, and till garden beds to prepare them for the spring garden.

 Be a Santa to a Senior logo

This season, many area seniors who are alone or impoverished will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the Be a Santa to a Senior program. Sponsored by the local Home Instead Senior Care office, the program brings together area nonprofits, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community to provide gifts and companionship for lonely and isolated seniors.

Nutrition & Services for Seniors in partnership with DoSomething.org, Mentor Up and the Meals on Wheels Association of America announced the success of "Love Letters," a campaign in which teens made handmade Valentine's Day cards designed to lift the spirits of their elders across the country, on Thursday, Feb. 13.
