The Museum of the Gulf Coast is opening its doors to Port Arthur third-graders throughout the months of October and December. In addition to touring the museum, each child will receive their very own dictionary, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Port Arthur and Motiva.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast will host a free Family Fun Day on Saturday, April 9, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with a day filled with arts, crafts, science experiments, hands-on demonstrations of Victorian and quilting crafts, plus learn how to spin, weave and knit through traditional art forms. The Museum of the Gulf Coast is at 700 Proctor in Port Arthur. For more information, call (409) 984-6453. Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m., Avril Falgout will unveil new work at the Museum of the Gulf Coast she has created in honor of Janis Joplin, whose birthday would have been Jan. 19. Birthday cake and refreshments will follow. Guests are encouraged to dress like rock stars, and a prize will be given for the best party attire.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) are celebrating Black History Month, and the public is invited to visit the museums to learn more.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast presents Port Arthur native and singing sensation Richard Perkins on Feb. 28 in honor of Black History Month. Perkins is a 1964 graduate of Lincoln High School and a professional classical singer, a deep, mellow bass.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast will host its annual Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday, Dec. 13, in Port Arthur. The event will include holiday arts and crafts, games, carriage rides to Pompeian Villa, a live bird presentation by the Audubon Society, a performance by the Becky Valls Dance Company, an all day art activity with local artist Summer Lydick and holiday refreshments available for purchase.

Time capsule contents

The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur took visitors on a journey back in time on July 2. Museum staff displayed items from a time capsule buried 20 years ago in July 1994 and other rare items the museum has collected over the last 50 years.
