The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports Ricky D. Smith, the man reported missing in Orange County since the early morning hours of Jan. 1, was found safely at home yesterday evening, Jan. 4.

OCSO Criminal Investigator Janois Strause Grizzaffi said at 11 p.m. on Jan. 4 that Smith was safe at the Orange County residence where he is staying.

A man who had been ringing in the New Year with friends at a bar in Beaumont reportedly went missing on the ride home, and the Orange County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public assistance in locating the Buna resident, according to OCSO Criminal Investigator Janois Strause Grizzaffi.

In November 2016, the United States Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit agreed with a jury decision that awarded $2.5 million in damages against Orange County for the wrongful death of an inmate held in the county jail’s detention “bubble” for days on end as the mentally ill man died of renal failure in a pool of uneaten jail food and human waste.

Christopher Morgan

Christopher Morgan, 31, of Vidor has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a fatal auto-pedestrian crash on Concord Road in Orange County on Dec. 26, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A blood specimen has been submitted to the crime laboratory and toxicology results are pending, DPS Sgt. Stephanie Davis reported Dec. 28. The investigation is still ongoing.

The sheriff, his deputies, family and friends gave away toys to fulfill families’ Christmas wishes during the Orange County Blue Santa giveaway at the VFW in Orange on Dec. 17.
