Suspect still at large after shooting in downtown Port Arthur

Port Arthur Police are looking for a gunman after a reported shooting near 440 Procter Street in downtown Friday, Oct. 28. Just before midnight, PAPD received a report of a shooting near Wellborn’s.

Officers located the crime scene and “numerous spent shell casings,” according to the release. PAPD’s Crime Scene Unit responded to photograph and collect evidence at the scene.

New PA police chief says he wants to engage community, give officers resources

When the new Port Arthur Police Chief Patrick Melvin addressed the Press Club of Southeast Texas on Oct. 20, he said he wants to “engage the community,” especially young people. He also referred to current tensions involving police, explaining how he hopes to help officers combat stresses and provide resources for dealing with mental health concerns like PTSD.

Speaking at Café del Rio in Beaumont, he began with his past experiences in Arizona and in traffic enforcement in Washington, D.C. He said he “learned a lot from the Salt River community.”

Two wounded in shooting at Avery Trace Apartments

Sunday, Oct. 2, about 1 a.m., Port Arthur Police Department responded to a call regarding shots fired at the Avery Trace Apartments on FM 365.

PAPD reports that the suspect fired into a crowd near the apartment complex parking lot, wounding two people. Seven vehicles were also damaged during the shooting.

The victims were transported to the Southeast Texas Medical Center and released with minor injuries.

The suspect remains at large.

Fatal accident in Port Arthur over the weekend

Saturday, Oct. 1 about 4 p.m., several 911 calls came into the Port Arthur Police Department reporting an accident with injuries at Gulfway Drive and San Antonio Avenue.

Officers responding to the scene discovered a GMC pickup that collided with a Toyota, trapping four people inside.

PAPD freed three injured people from the Toyota, but the other passenger was deceased. Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam identified the deceased as Bridgette Miles-Davis, 57, of Port Arthur.

Memorial Blvd in Port Arthur closure to reconstruct accident scene

Beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Port Arthur Police Department's Advanced Accident Investigation Team are closing all southbound lanes at the 69/73 interchange to reconstruct an accident scene. 

There was a fatal accident in which at least one car was engulfed in flames earlier this week, as previously reported by the Examiner. 

Traffic will be diverted to Highway 73 east or west bound during this time. Northbound 69 will remain open for travel.

Fiery crash in Port Arthur results in fatality

Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 12:14 p.m., the Port Arthur police and fire departments received a 911 call reporting a major accident at 39th Street and Memorial Boulevard.

Officers responding to the scene “found one vehicle engulfed in flames,” a PAPD release said. After the fire was extinguished, responders discovered one occupant inside the charred vehicle.

Man drowns near Taylors Bayou Bridge

Port Arthur Police reported a man’s body was recovered from the waterway near Taylor’s Bayou Bridge the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 24.

The body was discovered after the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Office received a call at 2:07 p.m. that “a person had gone underwater at the Taylor’s Bayou Bridge on Highway 73 in Port Arthur,” according to a JCSO release.

Police arrest evading suspect who rammed gates of Port Arthur refinery

Police ultimately arrested a man who led them on chase through the city of Port Arthur as officers investigated a report that the man was repeatedly ramming the gates at the Motiva refinery with his car, reports Sgt. R. Rowe of the Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD).
