It’s a Classic Movie Night Double Feature on Friday, March 31, with the showing of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Dark Star” at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4-$6 and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or at the Jefferson Theatre (345 Fannin St.), evening of the show.

Written and directed in 1968 by Stanley Kubrick, “2001: A Space Odyssey” follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists and the sentient supercomputer, HAL 9000, to Jupiter to help investigate an alien monolith.

Rated G and 149 minutes in length, the film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, ambiguous imagery and is noted as “one of the greatest films of all time.”

“Dark Star” is a low-budget, sci-fi satire that focuses on a group of scientists whose mission is to destroy unstable planets. Two decades into their mission, they have to battle their alien mascot, that resembles a beach ball, as well as a “sensitive” and intelligent bombing device that starts to question the meaning of its existence.

Only 83 minutes and Rated G, “Dark Star” was the directorial debut of horror genius John Carpenter, who went on to direct films such as “Halloween,” “The Fog,” “Escape from New York,” “The Thing,” “The Live” and “Escape from L.A.”
