Lunch & Look at Home

Artists Frederic Remington and Charles Marion Russell created enduring visions of the American West. Join Sarah E. Boehme, Curator of the Stark Museum of Art, for an in-depth look at these two artists and their works of art during Lunch & Look @ Home: The Wests of Remington & Russell on Thursday, Aug. 11, from noon to 1 p.m.

Using the collections of the Stark Museum of Art, the talk will explore how each artist portrayed “cowboys and Indians,” the military, and western lands in paintings, sculpture, and the written word.  Remington and Russell were instrumental in constructing ideas about the “Wild West” with resulting stereotypes. Through their visual drama and poetry, we see how these views of the West continue to have impact today. 

  “Remington and Russell are always mentioned among our visitors as must-see artists in our collection, and their images and words are intertwined with how many people think about and imagine the ‘Wild West’,” said Jennifer Dickinson, Director, Education. “Dr. Sarah Boehme’s expertise in this area is unrivaled, and her expert guidance during this program will help participants look closer and carefully discern the impact of Remington and Russell’s work on the global view of the American West.”

 Participants must register for this free program in advance by Thursday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m. via starkmuseum.org. The program will be facilitated live through Zoom from the Stark Museum of Art in Orange. Participants are encouraged to download Zoom prior to the event. A recording of the program will be made available at a later date at online as well as the museum’s YouTube channel.
