Former city of Port Arthur Water Meter Services Department Supervisor, 57-year-old Robert Leblanc, 57, was indicted in Jefferson County Feb. 3 on five counts of theft by a public servant.

Leblanc was arrested Jan. 5 amid accusations of metal theft from the city he once served. At the time of his arrest, Leblanc worked as a football referee for the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials.

Shirlene Cook has lived in Beaumont for decades, retiring from the Beaumont Independent School District in 2007 after 30 years of service. Throughout her life and her career, Cook has served the community in many capacities – volunteering, fundraising for nonprofits, leading, teaching – and that service has continued on into her retirement.

Cook has battled racism and sexism, breaking down barriers segregating certain groups, but she says she is just doing what is right.

More than 120 students and faculty were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning Thursday, Jan. 28, at Beaumont hospitals after a failed gasket on a Marshall Middle School boiler led to a gas leak.


It’s that time of year again — Winter Warrant Round-Up time — which means it’s time to take care of any outstanding fines or warrants, or go to jail.

“This is a multi-agency effort,” BPD spokesperson Sgt. Cody Guedry said at a press conference Feb. 3. “We’re targeting thousands of defendants.”

Guedry said officers from all over the area are going to be participating in the effort from Feb. 22-28, looking for folks who owe fines for warrants, ordinance violations, traffic citations and more.
