Canadian Football League

Willie Jefferson, a 2009 Ozen High School graduate, recently helped guide the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to another Grey Cup championship, which is the Canadian Football League’s version of the NFL’s Super Bowl.

The Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in overtime, 33-25, on Dec. 12 as Jefferson had three tackles in the win. The 30-year-old defensive end joined Winnipeg in 2019 after two seasons in Edmonton and three in Saskatchewan.

He was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2019 and was just named a third-time CFL All-Star.

Lamar Cardinals

Winners of four consecutive games, the Lamar women’s basketball game with Southeastern Louisiana has been cancelled due to positive COVID-19 test results within the Cardinals’ program. The game was slated to be played Wednesday in Beaumont and was set to be the team’s final game before the Christmas holidays.
The Cardinals will enter a 10-day period of quarantine beginning on Dec. 21 and will have to forfeit the two WAC games with Sam Houston State on Dec. 30 and Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 1.

Freshman Akasha Davis has proven to be a big-time contributor for the team despite being a freshman. Earlier this week, the native of Dallas was the recipient of her third career WAC Freshman of the Week award.
In the win over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 15, Davis led the team with 18 points in just 27 minutes of action. Nine of her points came in the first quarter. Already leading the Cardinals with 14.8 points per game, Davis still holds the WAC lead with a 60.8 field goal percentage. She is second on LU with 7.4 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in seven of nine starts.

The men’s basketball team dropped their fourth game in a row Dec. 20 to UL Monroe, 80-77. The Cards shot 50% for the game and owned a double-digit first half lead, but was unable to hold to the lead due to 18 turnovers that accounted for 32 points by ULM.

Sophomore Jordyn Adams led LU with a season-high 21 points while senior C.J. Roberts came off the bench to add 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Kasen Harrison scored 13 points, while fellow freshman Brock McClure added 12 and sophomore Corey Nickerson finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Lamar (2-11) will take days off before the start of conference play Thursday, Dec. 30, at Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m.
