Experience the joy of camaraderie and color, and honor the strength, courage and spirit of cancer survivors as Gift of Life presents the fifth annual Julie Richardson Procter 5K Ribbon Run Color Rush, scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in downtown Beaumont.

Through the support of Jon Huntsman Sr., board member of the Beaumont Foundation of America, 34 medically underserved Southeast Texas women received free Gift of Life clinical breast exams and mammograms on the UTMB mobile van at Cristo Rey Catholic Church in Beaumont last week. One client who had an abnormal mammogram screening was referred immediately for diagnostic testing, which is also completely underwritten by the Gift of Life.

Endorsing the Gift of Life’s mission to save lives, owners of Tri-Con Inc. (dba Exxpress Mart) Imad and Elias Sarkis implemented a holiday giving campaign at their 20 regional convenience stores, generating $22,500 —almost double last year’s campaign to further the Gift of Life’s healthcare and educational programs.

More than 175 city and county officials, healthcare professionals, first-responders, leaders in education and sports, as well as the media and other cross sections of the community turned out Friday, March 13, for the launch of the Tobacco Control Coalition of Southeast Texas’ regional tobacco-free awareness initiatives at the Beaumont Civic Center.

Downtown Beaumont is shutting down traffic to show its colors Saturday, Oct. 11 – more specifically, pink and teal to symbolize support for survivors of breast and ovarian cancer, and to celebrate the lives of those who have been taken by the diseases.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 15,000 Texas women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and nearly 6,000 women will lose their lives to this devastating disease. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in six women has a lifetime probability of developing pre-cancerous cells in the breast, and one in eight has a lifetime likelihood of developing invasive breast cancer (in which cancer impacts healthy cells).

Commissioners proclaimed June “Men’s Health Month” in a Monday, June 2, meeting of the Orange County Commissioners Court.

Representatives from Gift of Life visited the court to promote their prostate cancer initiative, which raises awareness and offers free prostrate cancer screenings among other health screenings to eligible men in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange.
