The Brooks Road overpass, if closed, will affect access to public facilities.

The citizenry spoke and the city listened, unanimously approving a resolution opposing the removal of the Brooks Road overpass as proposed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), part of an ongoing interstate widening project.

During the Beaumont City Council’s final meeting of 2017, held Dec. 19, citizens approached the podium to tell their representatives why they feel the overpass is needed and should not be removed. Beaumont resident Patrick Phelan told the council the overpass provides convenient and safe passage for those who live in nearby neighborhoods.

Jefferson County was awarded a donated Kubota SSV75 Skid Steer in a special ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 13. County Commissioner Eddie Arnold receiving the donation on the county’s behalf, was joined by Jefferson County Precinct No. 1 staff members and a representative from local Kubota dealer, Beaumont Tractor, at Jefferson County Precinct No. 1 Road and Bridge Service Center at 20205 West Highway 90 in China.

Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham has a message for unregistered sex offenders looking for a place to hide: Stay away from Southeast Texas.

“I really think sexual predators should find somewhere else to go,” Wortham said, adding that unregistered sex offenders in Jefferson County would be prosecuted for failing to register and for failing to change their address within seven days of moving. They face third-degree felony charges and punishment ranging from two to 10 years behind bars.

According to information from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, on Monday, Nov. 6, 30-year-old Arthur Ray Rogers Jr. pleaded guilty to murdering 31-year-old Joshua Jerome Green on May 11, 2015. This case was investigated by the Beaumont Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mike Laird. Rogers has not yet been sentenced for the crime, but he is awaiting his fate while in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail, where he has been held since Aug. 15.

Charles Henry Hawkins

Criminal District Attorney Bob Wortham announced Nov. 3 that a jury has found Charles Henry Hawkins, 57, guilty of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony. The jury assessed Hawkins’ punishment at 10 years confinement in the Institutional Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a $10,000 fine. Hawkins was formally sentenced by Judge Raquel West.

McFaddin Beach

The Texas Trustee Implementation Group in charge of Deepwater Horizon coastal restoration formally adopted its first plan for allocating Natural Resource Damages Act funds to restore natural resources injured by the 2010 oil spill. The plan contains a $15.8 million grant for the McFaddin Beach and Dune restoration along Jefferson County’s Gulf of Mexico coast.

Police in Port Neches are investigating an apparent murder-suicide, reports Police Chief Paul Lemoine.

According to a news release from Lemoine, officers with the Port Neches Police Department responded to the Ridgewood Apartments at 699 Ridgewood Dr. in reference to a welfare concern at 12:10 p.m. on Oct. 22. A caller from Arkansas was trying to contact his father at that location for the past couple of days.
