Lamar University’s Center for Innovation Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (CICE) is partnering with faith-based and community organizations for the first ever Port Arthur Hope & Opportunity Event. The free community event with be Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Booker T. Elementary School, located on 1300 Freeman Avenue in Port Arthur, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Hope & Healing Grief Support Group, offered by the Samaritan Counseling Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, will be meeting from September 11, 2017 at 5:30 PM to Monday, October 30, on Monday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

More than 1,100 Port Arthur ISD stakeholders turned up to vote on a tax increase proposed by the school district on and in advance of Election Day — Saturday, Aug. 5. With more than 57 percent of the vote, or 654 ballots, the tax increase passed.

Jefferson County Drainage District No. 7 notified the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of a floodwall failure near Taylor Bayou on Tuesday morning, according to a news release from Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator Greg Fountain.

Southeast Texas singer-songwriter Robert Frith will play from 8-11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Rodair Roadhouse located at 6701 Jade Ave in Port Arthur. Frith has played at several big musical festivals in the area including the Gulf Coast Jam as well as Janis Joplin Memorial Concert. The diversity of Frith’s original music earned him airplay on radio stations with music formats of pop, rock, classic rock and country. In 2007, he was chosen out of 30,000 contestants as a Regional Finalist for the reality music show Nashville Star on USA Network.

On July 31 at 7:19 p.m., Port Arthur Police Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Sabine Avenue in response to a shooting.

Police were dispatched to 4200 block 32nd St. in Port Arthur on Saturday, July 30, in response to an unresponsive three month old infant.

Upon arrival, Port Arthur Police began administering life saving measures until PAFD and Acadian EMS arrived on scene and took over life saving efforts. The infant was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas where a short time later the infant was pronounced deceased.

Port Arthur City Attorney Valecia “Val” Tizeno was threatened with contempt of court charges and sanctions in Judge Larry Gist’s Drug Court on Monday, July 24, for failing to turn over evidence to a defendant’s legal counsel as had been ordered by the court. However, Tizeno says misdirected electronic communication was the impetus of the problem she has every intention of clearing up as soon as possible.

As of 8:30 the morning of Tuesday, July 25, the Port Arthur Fire Department terminated the emergency incident at German Pellets. This incident has been ongoing since April 15, and PAFD has had personnel on-site 24/7. The remaining silo temperatures are in the normal range and cleanup of the site continues. PAFD will continue to attend daily meetings and monitor the site until the remaining silos are empty. This incident is one of the longest in PAFD history lasting 102 days.
