A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted Joal Morgan Riley, 47, for aggravated assault upon a public servant, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office announced Feb. 8.

Riley’s indictment stems from an altercation Dec. 22. Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD) reported a 911 call at 6:33 p.m. stating that an officer was being assaulted at Willow Lakes Apartments.

The Southeast Texas Arts Council will honor supporters at its annual Hearts for the Arts recognition ceremony held Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Beau Reve (4400 Atlantic Road) in Port Neches from 5-8 p.m. Following the recognition ceremony will be a Valentine’s reception, which includes d’oeuvres, wine, desserts and coffee.

The senior club at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Port Arthur hosted a luncheon for local first responders Jan. 30.

Maria Saldana, president of the senior club, organized the dinner.

Several ladies served gumbo, rice and potato salad with apple pie for dessert while the other club members played bingo.

A Jefferson Count Grand Jury indicted a Port Arthur woman for burglary Jan. 25 following an incident last year during which police allege the woman stole her ex-husband's shotgun, threatened him and others with the weapon and then crashed the golf cart she was operating into a ditch in front of his house.

Police in Port Arthur are investigating a shooting that left one man dead at the Baymont Inn & Suites on Highway 73 Dec. 29, reports the Port Arthur Police Department. 

Police responded to a report of shots fired at the hotel shortly after 9 p.m. Responding units discovered a 29-year-old Port Arthur resident deceased at the scene and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Two recent accidental shootings in Port Arthur suggest some residents don’t how to safely handle weapons, and the number of new gun owners grows all the time. This year alone, the FBI recorded 185,713 background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background system for Black Friday purchases in the U.S., 400 more than 2015, Business Insider reported Nov. 28.

Although they’re often given as presents, firearms are not toys. Mishandled, they can lead to injuries that range from embarrassing to life threatening.
