The Vidor City Council will meet on Thursday, July 11, to decide whether to limit the city’s number of 8-liner style gaming machines, which are casinostyle gaming machines traditionally used in gambling enterprises and allowed to function in Texas under terms that they are used “for entertainment only” with no monetary gain for the player.

According to the current city ordinance, the limit of licensed and permitted amusement redemption machines shall not exceed 190. However, during the last city council meeting, setting a lower limit was discussed.

Although the limit has the potential to be lowered during this week’s meeting, and the number 150 was unofficially discussed, the city would not order the removal of machines already approved but would simply not allow new permits outside of the lowered limit.

Several questions were posed to city attorney Chris Leavins and are expected to be clarified during this week’s meeting.

Currently, all 190 machines within Vidor city limits are subject to an annual inspection and regulatory enforcement license fee of $925, bringing in $175,750 annually, in addition to an occupation tax permit fee of $15 each to account for $13,875.
