Photography enthusiasts and nature lovers have a special opportunity to embark on an artistic journey along the Neches River, as the Big Thicket Association’s Neches River Adventures EcoArt Boat Tour on Photography has been rescheduled for June 23. This unique event will be hosted by nationally acclaimed photographer and well-known Lamar University professor, Keith Carter, aboard the Ivory Bill.

Guests will enjoy a leisurely trip on the ecologically diverse Neches River, often referred to as “the last wild river” in East Texas. The tour will navigate through Pine Island Bayou and the Big Thicket National Preserve. Throughout the journey, Carter will discuss how he combines his life experiences with photography, sharing tips on creating compelling images in a busy world and the importance of building a powerful portfolio.

Keith Carter, an award-winning photographer and Regents Professor at Lamar University, will also highlight his newest book, “Ghostlight,” a collection capturing the otherworldly spirits of southern wetlands, featuring ethereal and haunting images of swamps, marshes, bogs, baygalls, bayous and fens. From Ossabaw Island, Georgia, to his home ground of East Texas, Carter’s work evokes the secretive and mysterious beauty of these landscapes.

The tour will depart from Beaumont RV and Marina, located at 560 Marina Dr., at 6 p.m. and return at 8 p.m. The cost of the tour is $40 per person, with seating limited to 26 passengers. This event serves as a fundraiser for the Big Thicket Association, supporting free environmental education classes for area students.

Carter’s career includes over 115 solo exhibitions in 13 countries. His work is featured in collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Carter’s contributions to the arts have earned him the Texas Medal of Arts, among other honors.
