Hundreds of individuals came together May 9 to participate in the annual Mental Health Matters Luncheon, marking a significant step forward in the collective effort to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health. Sponsored by Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, the event served as a platform to foster open dialogue and solidarity in addressing mental health issues within the community.

Guests gathered for the recognition of individuals dedicated to mental health advocacy when Kim Phelan, a passionate advocate and Board Member of MHA (Mental Health America) of SETX, took center stage to present the prestigious Mental Health Matters All Star Awards. Phelan's unwavering commitment to mental health dates to 2008, where she embarked on a journey to champion the rights of children and parents entangled in CPS cases. Prior to her current role, Phelan held positions as president of Mental Health America of Southeast Texas and executive director of Inspire, Encourage, Achieve.

The event also served as an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding contributions of two esteemed individuals: Jefferson County 279th Civil District Court Judge, Randy Shelton, and Jefferson County Court at Law No. 2 Judge Terrence Holmes. Shelton, with a service record dating back to 2007, has garnered accolades such as Texas CASA Judge of the Year and Family Advocate of the Year. Holmes, a revered local leader, has immersed himself in various avenues of community service, serving as a mentor, volunteer and board member for organizations dedicated to social welfare.

Dr. Roshni Koli, a board-certified adult and child psychiatrist, graced the event as the keynote speaker. Koli's expertise in direct clinical health care administration has been instrumental in spearheading initiatives aimed at enhancing pediatric mental health services. Currently affiliated with The Meadows Institute, Koli noted commitment to destigmatizing mental health and ensuring equitable access to care for individuals of all ages.

Julie O’Malley, executive director of MHA of SETX, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who have lent their support to mental health awareness initiatives within the local community.
