It was in 1789 when Robert Burns’ poem was set to a traditional tune, “Auld Lang Syne,” which became the song that would be sung every New Year’s Eve. “Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne?”

Going out? Staying in to watch the ball drop? Well, you certainly have plenty of options.

If live music is a must, most local establishments are hosting bands with acts including Hunter Courts, The Bogarts, Casey Chesnutt and Britt Godwin. For a detailed list of who’s playing where, view our Live Music section on Page 3.

Two live music shows we thoroughly recommend are Kree Harrison and L.A. Roxx.

Everyone remembers Harrison, right? The Woodville, Texas native was runner-up of “American Idol” in 2013 and went on to sign with One Vision Music Group. She recently released a new album, “Chosen Family Tree.”

Harrison will perform at the Texas Ave. Tavern (2845 Texas Ave.) in Bridge City at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling (409) 313-6802.

The Oaks Event Center (2110 S. Main St.) in Vidor will host “The World’s Greatest Arena Rock Tribute Band,” L.A. Roxx. A solid line up with vocalist Kriss D. Deville, guitarists, and brothers, Brandon and Gabriel Michaels, J.J. Savage and Drew Dye will perform popular rock hits from the 1980s from the likes of Poison, Motley Crüe, Journey, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Bon Jovi and many others.

Tickets are $30-$55 and can be purchased online at theoakseventcenter.com. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Beaumont hotspot Pour09 Bar & Rooftop (6165 Muela Creek Drive) is hosting an “Adult Prom Party” beginning at 9 p.m. Don your favorite prom dresses and suits and dance the night away plus have a chance to win “Best Dressed” and maybe even “Prom King and Queen.” For reservations, call (409) 333-1260.

For those who chase the chance to strike it rich, the casinos in nearby Lake Charles, Louisiana, is never a bad option with the Golden Nugget, L’Auberge or the new Horseshoe. Golden Nugget will host live music from party bands Satellite, The Fuse and as well as a “Mad Hatter Ball” party inside Blue Martini.

It’s also become a yearly tradition to ring in the New Year on television. All the major networks will have coverage while a slew of channels host marathons.

This year’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” on ABC will once again be hosted by Ryan Seacrest live from Times Square in New York City. Scheduled to perform are Duran Duran, New Edition, Jax, Ciara, Aly & AJ, Shaggy, Dove Cameron and others.

CBS will counter with “New Year’s Eve: Nashville’s Big Bash” with sets from country music stars such as Zac Brown Band, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, Brooks & Dunn, Thomas Rhett, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Lainey Wilson and more.

Not to be outdone, NBC returns “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” with host Miley Cyrus alongside Dolly Parton from Miami, Florida. Musical performances will be from Fletcher, Latto, Liily, Rae Sremmurd and Sia.

For those not in the music mood, there are plenty of marathon options such as “2022: It’s Toast” at 7 p.m. on NBC. Hosted by Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, the two will welcome celebrity appearances and “look back at the light-hearted and humorous moments that provided a much-needed break during a challenging year, including the buzziest viral videos, trends, bloopers and pranks.”

There’s also a plethora of other show options on television including a marathon of the original old school epi¬sodes of the “Twilight Zone” on SyFy. Comedy Central will show, of course, comedy movies. AMC has advertised “The best comedies of the 1980s” like “Revenge of the Nerds, “The Great Outdoors” and “Major League.”

The 134th Rose Parade is actually Monday, Jan. 2. It begins at 10 a.m. and will be shown live on both ABC and NBC.

If you’re really into setting new resolutions, then lace up your running shoes for the annual Free Resolution 5K Run/Walk hosted by the Sea Rim Striders on Sunday, Jan. 1, at 9:30 a.m. Location is 9000 Dishman Road in Beaumont. To register, view Sea Rim Striders’ Facebook page.

Don’t forget to eat black-eyed peas, cabbage and cornbread for good luck and prosperity in 2023.
