Regardless of what Old Man Winter sends our way, one thing is certain – the Houston, Boat, Sport and Travel Show will be open for our entertainment Jan. 2-11, at the NRG (Reliant) Center. This is a sure-fire event the entire family will get into. There are boats, RVs, fishing tackle, jewelry, cookware, paintings, fashion items, rainbow trout to catch, and fishing and hunting guides galore. But wait, there’s more. Not only does this show have more than 16 acres of boats and campers, but hot tubs and saunas, as well.

The Lamar men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to begin Southland Conference play this weekend as the Cards will host Nicholls on Saturday, Jan. 3. The Lady Cards (3-8) will play at 4 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m.

Then, both teams will travel east to New Orleans on Monday, Jan. 5 for a double header with the ladies tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Girls’ Haven has announced that its 21st annual Gumbo Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015. The Gumbo Cook-Off will be held once again at the Parkdale Mall Parking Lot.

The faculty, staff and students of Lamar State College – Orange united in an effort to lessen the challenge of hunger in Orange. Through numerous fundraisers campus-wide, LSC-O raised a total of $5,300 to assist five area soup kitchens. Dec. 10, five checks for $1,060 each were presented to Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, St. Mary Catholic Church, Salem United Methodist Church, and First Presbyterian Church.
