A man once sentenced to life in prison for the 2012 death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter was up for a new trial Monday, Jan. 30, after the Ninth Court of Appeals found a trial court error. Prior to a new trial commencing, according to Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney Kim Hobbs Pipkin, the defendant accepted a plea agreement for 18 years in prison.

Former Beaumont water utilities director Dr. Hani Tohme, ousted from the position in 2015 after an audit allegedly uncovered deficiencies in the department, including in oversight and payroll spending, has applied for candidacy to run against longtime Mayor Becky Ames in the coming May election.

Police are investigating a Feb. 2 report of an aggravated kidnapping in Beaumont and a possible connection between the assailant and two victims, who were found unharmed following the incident, reports Officer Haley Morrow.
