Sunday, July 23, around 1:30 a.m., Beaumont emergency services responded to a rail car leaking methyl chloride at the Union Pacific rail yard at 550 Lindbergh in Beaumont, Beaumont Fire Captain Brad Penisson said. HAZMAT crews responded and did determine a small leak was present. The HAZMAT crew corrected the leak by tightening a bolt on the rail car. No evacuations were performed or needed. No injuries came of the incident.

On Wednesday July 26, at 7 a.m., the grade crossing at Cedar Street between 4th Street and Avenue C in downtown Beaumont will be closed to all traffic.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced July 26 that the Child Exploitation Unit (CEU) of his office arrested Roberto Cruz-Lara, 57, of Waco, on one count of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony. Cruz-Lara could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

In an effort to expand recreational opportunities in the national preserve and provide unique experiences for all, effective October 2017, Big Thicket National Preserve will open a new waterfowl hunting area and permit the use of air rifles for squirrel hunting.

Squirrel hunting has been a popular activity in the preserve for many years. In accordance with Texas regulations, only squirrel (fox squirrel, cat/grey squirrel) may be taken with air rifles.

BEAUMONT - A Houston father and son were each sentenced to federal prison for federal drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston today.

Rolando Delarosa, Sr., 43, and Rolando Delarosa, Jr., 22, both pleaded guilty on Feb. 27, 2017, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and were sentenced to  120 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield.
