Bus service to Social Security office begins in January

City bus riders who’ve been without service to portions of Beaumont are getting a little reprieve now that city officials have decided on the addition of a new route.

After City Manager Kyle Hayes recommended the addition at the Beaumont City Council’s Nov. 6 meeting, the council merged routes and removed a small “tripper” bus that runs mostly on weekends in order to keep the route changes revenue neutral, not raising the city’s operating cost.

Rep. Larry Taylor report cites ‘bleeding of TWIA ratepayers’

State Rep. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) made national news late last month when he released a report stating that since Hurricane Ike struck the Texas Gulf Coast more than four years ago, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) has paid out more than $1.2 billion dollars on individually litigated claims related to the disaster.

Court would keep veterans out of jail, in treatment

The nation rejoiced at the end of 2011 when it was announced that an unprecedented number of troops would be returning home from combat after officially declaring an end to the nearly decade-long Iraq War. Over the course of the war, according to White House figures, more than 30,000 Americans were wounded in Iraq, nearly 4,500 Americans killed, and many more of the estimated 150,000 troops that exited Iraq in the last three years suffered illness not reported to the government.
