Representatives of the Jefferson County Bar accept the Hankinson Award.

Bar associations from around the state, including The Jefferson County Bar Association, were honored for their commitment to access to justice issues during the State Bar of Texas 2017 Bar Leaders Conference July 28 and 29 in Houston.

Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, liaison to the Texas Access to Justice Commission, presented Pro Bono Service and Deborah G. Hankinson awards on behalf of the Commission on July 29 at the Westin Galleria.

Quincy Davis Jr.

Quincy Davis Jr. was just 10 years old when a car crash claimed his life prior to the end of the 2016-17 school year. According to reports at the time, the Beaumont ISD Pietzch-MacArthur Elementary School student was thrown from the back passenger seat of a vehicle driven by the boy’s mother when the car hit a utility pole in the South End of Beaumont just before 8 p.m. on May 16.

 A judge accused of felonious acts while sitting on the bench is requesting through his legal counsel that they be afforded a chance to review what evidence was used by the state’s prosecutor to secure an indictment alleging criminal wrongdoing.

The Houston Zoo’s baby sea lion has a name! The five-week-old male California sea lion has been named Max by two of the zoo’s donors. Jim and Beverly Postl won the honor of naming the pup at Zoo Ball, the zoo’s annual fundraising gala in April. The Postls are longtime Houston Zoo supporters, and Jim serves on the zoo’s board of directors.

Laura Laverna Stuermer

Laura Laverna Stuermer, 80, died July 28, 2017, following an extended illness.

Born Laura Laverna Lambert, she was the daughter of the Walter and Velma Lambert of Nederland, both deceased. A 1954 graduate of Nederland High School, she obtained a degree in pharmacy from University of Houston.
