The Women’s March on Washington grew overnight from a Facebook event started by a retired attorney in Hawaii to well over 200,000 attendees and supporters anticipated.

Locally, retired teacher Shelby Smith is leading a sister march in downtown Beaumont on Jan. 21 on the same day. 

“It’s basically a voice for the people. It’s not going to be a protest for just one thing,” Smith said. “It’s to show our solidarity with the Women’s March in Washington.”

With help from K-9 Gus, police tracked down and arrested two men Jan. 16 after the pair allegedly fled the scene following an aggravated robbery at the Heritage Inn, 2850 I-10 East in Beaumont.

Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office are currently investigating a fatal shooting near Evadale Jan. 16, according to media reports and the sheriff's office. 

There are few details at this time, and the sheriff's office is not yet releasing information but confirmed the shooting. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

A local man is behind bars charged with murder after police discovered the remains of a 23-year-old Beaumont resident in a burning vehicle Jan. 14, reports Beaumont Police Department Officer Carol Riley.
