The second-floor courtroom at the Jefferson County Courthouse is often the scene of intense crime and punishment dramas. Last Monday, Jan. 12, Judge John Stevens of the Criminal District Court decided the fate of Terry Rogers, accused in the theft of a cherished local landmark that had stood in front of the Port Arthur Public Library for over 30 years.

At a packed Beaumont City Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13, incoming Ward IV councilman Bill Sam was sworn in and officially took his seat on the council. Sam was appointed to the elected position to fill the unexpired term left by former councilmember Jamie Smith, who was elected to serve the area as Jefferson County District Clerk.

After a tight race battling Republican Charlie Wiggins and a subsequent recount, new District Clerk Jamie Smith was finally sworn into his hard-won office Jan. 8 in the Jury Impaneling Room at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
